How to take interesting images on a rainy day

Saturday's Beginner's Photography Workshop in Auckland

When I saw this puddle I instantly though of the photo 'Behind the Gare St. Lazare' by Henri Cartier-Bresson

One of our students was kind enough to leap over the puddle to re create it. The background was quite busy so I chose to just include the feet of the leaper in the top one third, with the reflection being the main part of the image on the lower two thirds of the image.

My settings were ISO 2000 1/500th of a second at F 6.3 with a 35mm focal length. There was very low light so I chose a high ISO of 2000 to allow a faster shutter speed of 1/500th to freeze the movement. Usually I would use a minimum of 1/1000th for freezing movement but I was happy with a little bit of movement in this picture. I chose F6.3 to let in as much light as possible without losing too much of my depth of field, and keeping both the leaper and reflection in focus.

This winter I'm sure you will have lots of puddles to play with. Go out and create your own Henri Cartier-Bresson and post your results!
